Fatty acids, alkanones and alcohols from a major lower Triassic low-permeability petroleum reservoir

For the first time, polar organic compounds in extracted bitumen from Lower Triassic Montney Formation have been analyzed. This stratigraphic unit is one of most prolific low-permeability reservoirs Western Canada. However, its geochemical characterization a challenge due to low biomarker concentration liquids and frequent mixing gas/condensate hydrocarbons. Since typical biomarkers were not available, this study focused on another group molecules, oxygen-compounds, which derivatized subsequently resolved using chromatographic techniques. In fractions, based their contrasting molecular distributions, n -fatty acids alkan-2-ones do seem share common origin an apparent association with n-alkanes. also report 1,13-, 1,14- 1,15-diols fossil matter; carbon number ranges C 15 -C 29 , 16 17 respectively. The similar distributions suggests for these compound classes, whereas theand 1,13-diols derive different source or mechanism. A series alkan-3-ols has identified 12 28 range, sharing distribution pattern acids. large variability detected oxygen-containing aliphatic introduces question whether they may record signature that precedes thermal degradation hydrocarbon migration events within reservoirs.
